Reece James is one of the few academy players to make the grade and transition to the senior team of Chelsea. The versatile right-back has featured in a number of positions for Chelsea whether it’s the right-back, center-back, or high up in the midfield or wing-back. He is renowned for his pace, athleticism, and good-crossing ability.
Reece James started his career at Chelsea aged 6. He will turn professional when he was 18 in 2017. He captained the u-18 team and was named the Academy Player of the Season as they won the treble in the 2016/17 season. They will defend the Youth Cup the following season.
Upon signing a new four-year contract with Chelsea, he will move to Championship side, Wigan ahead of the 2018/19 season. His strong showings endeared him to the Wigan fans as he was voted Player of the Year by them. He also won their Goal of the Season and Players’ Player of the Year award.
After his loan with Wigan, Reece James returned to Chelsea ahead of the 2019/20 season under Frank Lampard. He featured regularly for Chelsea as a right-back, sometimes as a wing-back or center-back in Chelsea Premier League and his debut Champions League competition.
He will go on to displace veteran right-back Cesar Azpilicueta as the first choice.
The arrival of Thomas Tuchel and his change of tactics to 3-4-2-1 means that James did feature for Chelsea as a wing-back or center-back, and not as a right-back. He started in the FA Cup final against Leicester.
Reece James will save his best performance for the Champions League final where he marshaled Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling and kept his attacking threat minimal in Chelsea’s victory.
James featured for England U-17 as they won the Toulon Tournament in 2017 making the team of the tournament. Reece James got his first international appearance under Gareth Southgate in October 2020. He will also become part of the squad that got to the EURO 2020 final.
