Chelsea has capped their impressive Champions League win last season with five nominations for the Ballon d’Or. Mason Mount is one of the Chelsea contingents that will be aiming to win the coveted award.
The other Chelsea players who were nominated are Jorginho, Kante, Cezar Azpilicueta, and Romelu Lukaku. This makes Chelsea the highest nominated team alongside Manchester City who also has five nominees with Raheem Sterling, Phil Foden, Ruben Dias, Kevin De Bruyne, and Riyad Mahrez making the 30-man shortlist.
Mason Mount is the second Chelsea academy player to be nominated after Frank Lampard. The Chelsea legend came close to winning the award in 2005 only to be denied by Barcelona maestro, Ronaldinho. He was the runner-up that year. No Chelsea player is yet to win the award.

The 22-year old Mason Mount was heavily involved as Chelsea won the Champions League. He was also an integral part of the England team that lost the 2020 Euro finals to Italy. He missed only two Premier League matches, as well as two Champions League matches last season.
Mount played 54 matches for Chelsea last season, the highest of any Chelsea players. Chelsea fans named him the Player of the Year award for the 2020/21 season.
He revealed that it was a dream to see his name on the list but downplayed his chances of winning it at this point of his career.
Lionel Messi is the current holder of the Ballon d’Or. He is also the record holder with six awards and is a favorite to win it this year alongside Robert Lewandowski and Chelsea’s Jorginho. The award ceremony is set to take place in November this year.
