In the award that will hold on November 29, Chelsea has produced the highest number of Ballon d’Or nominees as five Chelsea players will be in line to win the coveted award. Only Manchester City has the same number in the list.
Ngolo Kante, Jorginho, Romelu Lukaku, Cezar Azpilicueta, and Mason Mount are all included in the 30-player Ballon d’Or nominees.
Azpilicueta will make the list after a consistent season with Chelsea. He showed his leadership quality as he captained Chelsea to the Champions League, and was recalled to the Spanish national team.
Mason Mount is receiving his first nomination after a series of strong showings for Chelsea. The youngster made himself undroppable for both club and country. He led Chelsea to the Champions League title and narrowly lost the UEFA Euro trophy after the penalty-kick loss to Italy in the final.
Ngolo Kante put up some man-of-the-match performances as Chelsea won the Champions League. He also won the UEFA Men’s Midfielder of the Year. This is his third nomination for Ballon d’Or having made the list in 2017 and 2018.
Jorginho was instrumental as Chelsea won the Champions League. He carried the form to his national team, helping the Azzurri win the Euro 2020. He has already been crowned the 2021/21 UEFA Men’s Player of the Year.
Romelu Lukaku won the MVP in Serie A last season after leading Inter Milan to the Scudetto for the first time in nine years.
This year Ballon d’Or is a much open race with Lionel Messi, Lewandowski, Jorginho, and Cristiano Ronaldo slightly ahead of the rest.
Yashin Trophy for the Best Goalkeeper
Edouard Mendy won the UEFA Men’s Goalkeeper of the Season in August. The Yashin Trophy is named after the Russian goalkeeper, Lev Yashin renowned for being one of the best goalkeepers of all time. Mendy kept incredible nine clean sheets on Chelsea road to the Champions League victory.
Surprisingly, Mendy was not in the main Ballon d’Or nominees, with Gianluigi Donnarumma being the only goalkeeper on the list.
Another Chelsea goalkeeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga was nominated alongside Manuel Neuer, Jan Oblak, Allison Becker, and others in the inaugural edition of the award in 2019.
The list is made of 10 goalkeepers who performed better than the rest in Europe over the course of the season.
In the female category, five players from the Chelsea female team made the Ballon d’Or nominees.
