Since the start of the transfer market, Chelsea has been linked with a host of transfer targets, but talented Sevilla defender, Jules Kounde remained very high on Chelsea’s wishlist.
The reasons are clear. The France international has been a revelation since Sevilla plucked him from Bordeaux in a €25 million deal. He was then a relatively unknown talent before his move to Spain in June 2019.
He will slot in immediately into the Sevilla first-team setup starting 25 games in his debut season in La Liga. He will go on to make 34 appearances in the next season.
Kounde formed a rock-solid central defense with Brazilian Diego Carlos as Sevilla went all the way to win the Champions League after defeating Inter Milan in RheinEnergieSTADION
How good is Kounde?
At 178 cm, Kounde is not the tallest of defenders but he has won a respectable 64% of his aerial duels. He is a competent passer of the ball with 94% pass completion. He has the right concentration during matches.
He is a disciplined defender and has only 12 yellow cards in his three seasons at Sevilla. He has never received a red card in his career.
Sevilla’s keeper Bono managed to secure 15 clean sheets in 33 games in La Liga last season. He was the third-best in La Liga. This is down to the class of the defense in front of him.
Kounde will join the ever-improving Chelsea backline that has qualities such as Andreas Christensen, Rudiger, Thiago Silva, and Cesar Azpilicueta. He will come and add more classes to it.
Chelsea has seen several bids for Kounde rejected by Sevilla for not meeting their valuation of him. The 22-year-old is very keen to join Chelsea and has agreed on personal terms with the club.
The situation is that Chelsea and Sevilla are yet to agree on a fee. Roma sporting director, Monchi insists he will only leave if Chelsea meets his release clause, a figure that stands around €80 million.
Chelsea has made a bid in the region of €60 million for Kounde but was rejected by Sevilla. Chelsea will likely try to make a final push for him on the transfer deadline day.
With their negotiations with Atletico Madrid for Saul called off, the signing of Kounde seems to be on the cards today.
The sale of Kurt Zouma to West Ham has furnished Chelsea with the additional funds they need to make this happen. It is now left for the two teams to reach an agreement and brings to an end one of the longest pursuits of the summer.
